About URO:

The Ultimate Reentry Opportunity Initiative began in 2014 and is funded by the Park Foundation. URO evolved due to the greater community need to understand and redress the issues of recidivism in Tompkins County. URO is currently under the umbrella of the Cornell Cooperative Extension but is a stand-alone initiative.

The URO mission is to reduce and eliminate systemic barriers to reentry. URO utilizes a variation of both the Collective Impact approach and the Asset Based Community Development Model to accomplish our goal. We currently have working groups in the areas of employment, transportation, data and development and pro-social development. We are also working with community stakeholders to qualify reentry as a public health issue. URO has a partnership with The Civic Ensemble as we believe that the pathway to change is through the heart and no other organization reaches the heart of the issue like The Civic Ensemble.

URO is not a service agency, it is an organization that identifies the root causes of systemic barriers to reentry and incarceration and works with community partners to develop projects and opportunities that move the community closer to systemic change in reentry. URO is in constant communication with the criminal justice system partners to look for ways to reduce recidivism in Tompkins County and I think we are poised to make huge strides in the next few years.
