About the Course:

“Smart Driver” classes are held over a two-day period for a total of six hours of classroom instruction. Per New York State regulations, course participants receive a multi-year insurance discount for completing the course . In addition, participants can reduce up to four violation points on their driver’s license.  Participants must bring their driver’s license and AARP card (if a member) to class.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the largest and oldest driver safety program for people age 50 or older and is changing the driving behaviors of course participants. Annual participant surveys reveal that almost all participants (93%) had changed at least one of their key driving behaviors as a result of the course. Many reported changing multiple behaviors. The most common changed behaviors were: always checking blind spots (73%), maintaining following distance and space cushion (65%); and paying more attention when entering or exiting highways (60%). Further, 79% felt the information they learned prevented them from being in a crash. Most participants have taken the DSP course more than one time.

Fee

$20/AARP members, $25/non-members. Pay by check or money order, payable to AARP.
